Car Rental Hire in Rome, Italy

Guide to Car Rental Hire in Rome

Renting cars in Italy is no different to renting a vehicle anywhere else on the continent, in that you have to have a valid driving licence to be able to do so. However, there are a few things to remember about renting a car in Italy, especially in Rome.

Firstly, the stories you may have heard about drivers in Rome will mean that insurance is very much a 'must buy', especially if you are going to see a lot of the city. While Rome has a decent public transport system, driving in your Berlin car hire and rentalown car is the best way to get around, however there are few things to note and remember;

City taxes

Like London with its congestion charge, Italy has a series of taxes on motor vehicles entering certain Italian cities, including Rome and Milan. As such, it is important to know whether the city you are driving in will need an additional surcharge.

International Driving Licence:

While you may have your UK licence when renting a car, there is always the option to get an International Driver Licence. This is translated in Italian and should you be pulled over, would save on a lot of time and language difficulties.

Parking:

Parking in Italy, especially in Rome can be a logistical nightmare and even the locals don't follow the rules to the letter. Street parking is permitted at certain times, but essentially it all comes down to gambling what you think you can get away with. This is definitely how the locals handle parking in the city, but unless you want to get a hefty fine probably isn't recommended. Instead, there are often parking lots underground or on the outskirts of the city centre for tourists or other drivers.
