3 Reasons to visit the Island of Capri, Italy
Off the Sorrento peninsula, the Island of Capri is a popular tourist spot and over the years has inspired writers and artists alike. While the island has beautiful scenery, there are plenty of things to see and do on Capri such as historical villas, natural wonders and climbing Mount Solaro.
Villa Damecuta
One of the oldest ancient Roman villas on Capri, Villa Damecuta was reportedly lived in by the Emperor Tiberius as well as being owned by the Emperor Augustus. Although only a few ruins now remain, it is a wonderful
reminder of how Imperial Roman aristocracy used to live and work. Other notable villas on the island include the Villa San Michele, which was once the home of famed Swedish physician Axel Munthe.
La Grotta Azzurra
One of Italy's most stunning natural wonders, La Grotta Azzurra is famed for the intense blueness of the cave's waters as well as the silvery light emitted around the grotto's interior. La Grotta Azzurra can only be reached by boat or water taxi and the route into the grotto is renowned for is tiny natural opening – a gap that is only 2 metres high and 2 metres wide!
Mount Solaro
The highest point on Capri at 589 metres (above sea level), Mount Solaro is routinely climbed by tourists looking for stunning views of the island. For those looking for a more relaxing assent, there is always a chair lift that takes visitors to the top in 12 minutes. The 360 degree vista allows visitors to not only see the whole of Capri, but also the Sorrentine coastline, the Gulf of Naples and even the Pennines.
