Guide to the Vatican Museum in Rome
The Vatican Museum, which is located within Vatican City, is considered to be one of the greatest museums in the world because it displays treasures collected by the Roman Catholic Church through several centuries. Established by Pope Julius II in the 16th century, this museum i sbelieved to attract over 4 million people every year.
The Vatican Museum comprises a set of other museums and buildings like the Gregorian Museum of Profane Art, Chiaramonti Museum, the Egyptian Museum, Gregorian Museum of Etruscan Art, Christian Museum and the
Museum of Popes Clement XIV and Pius VI.
Visitors to the Vatican Museum will also be able to visit several themed galleries like the Gallery of the Tapestries, Vatican Picture Gallery, Gallery of the Candelabra, Gallery of the Maps, Collection of Modern Religious Art and one which features a vase collection.
Other interesting sights in the Vatican Museum include the Antiquarium Romanum, Apartment of St. Pius V, Room of the Immaculate Conception, the Sistine Chapel, Rooms of Raphael and the Sobieski Room.
The museum offers visitors access to services such as special disabled tours, an information desk, a restaurant, cafes, a post office and several shops. The museum is open from 9 am to 6 pm on all days except on Sundays and on special holidays. Tickets can be purchased at the ticket office that remains open from 9 am to 4 pm; alternatively, they can be purchased online.
Visitors must remember that not all these sections of the Vatican Museums are open to the public; however, they can be viewed on request.
