While Rome is one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in Europe, it is also famously expensive for tourists, especially for those on a budget. However, staying in Rome need not break the bank and here are some tips for saving money on accommodation in Rome.
Local knowledge
No-one is going to know more about where the cheapest hostels and hotels are then the local tourist office, so if you have gone to the city without pre-booking accommodation, try the local tourist office for suggestions. The staff 
at the tourist office will be able to suggest places to stay that will suit your budget.
Book online
Booking accommodation online is always going to save you money as well as enable you to find the hostel you want, at the price you can afford. Websites such as HostelWorld.com are able to show you the best rated hostels and hotels as well as the ones within your price range, so before booking your holiday, do some online research.
Do not stay in the centre
As with all capital cities, the more central you are, the more you are going to have to pay. If you have rented a car or some form of transport, it may be worth staying on the outskirts of the city in order to reduce accommodation costs. Hotels and hostels on the outskirts of the city will often have much lower prices so as to attract tourists away from the more well known places of accommodation.
Go off-peak
It's an obvious factor, but going during the off-peak months such as March/April or October will save you money rather than booking during the summer months.
